Synopsis:

In an alternate 1985 America, costumed superheroes are part of everyday society and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach (Haley) sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

Our Thoughts:

Yet another comic adaptation is making it’s way to theaters March 2009, this one the highly buzzed about Watchmen.

Since I never read the graphic novel or the comic book mini-series it was based on, I have no idea what all the fuss is about.

It’s definitely not casting, as no really big stars have attached themselves to the picture. Instead, the cast is populated by bit part players lead by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Denny from “Grey’s Anatomy”).

True, Carla Gugino is recognizable, but when was the last time she was the biggest name in a movie? Ah yes, that would be the mostly unseen Jaded back in ‘96. Great, that inspires confidence.

True the film does have director Zack Snyder at the helm, who happens to still be riding high off of his impressive 300 (2007). Since that was also based on a graphic novel, a glimmer of hope begins to shine on Watchmen.

But will Zack take this supporting actor cast and bring them and Watchmen up to 300 (2007)’s level? Fans of the graphic novel apparently seem to think so.

Let’s hope they’re right - otherwise, we could be looking at the next The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) - and no one wants that.
