W. (2008)

Synopsis:

Oliver Stone brings the life and times of our 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush (Brolin) to the big screen in this unofficial biopic.

Our Thoughts:

Oliver Stone has always seemed to be a magnet for controversy. After his fantastical take on the JFK assassination and his recent much-ballyhooed take on Alexander the Great, he now sets out to take on the current President of the United States, George W. Bush.

And what better time to do that than in the last days of Bush’s time in office? Already the public is unhappy with Bush thanks to his very unpopular war on Iraq - now Oliver Stone sets out to skewer him on the big screen. Sounds like movie magic waiting to happen.

And, as usual, Oliver Stone has nabbed some of the big names for his picture. This time, he’s got Josh Brolin (hot off his role in No Country For Old Men (2007)) to portray Georgie himself, and he’s backed up by Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush, Thandie Newton as Condoleeza Rice, Jeffrey Wright as Colin Powell, Ioan Gruffudd as British Prime Minister Tony Blair, James Cromwell as George H. W. Bush and Ellen Burstyn as Barbara Bush.

While some may question Stone’s political goals releasing the film so close to the election, I have a different question - will this be a big hit at the White House? Will Bush be able to sit down and watch Stone poke fun at him and take it in stride, or will this pic be banned from the White House screening room?

Whether or not it does well in the White House remains to be seen, but chances are good everyone else is going to be flocking to this one - if only to be able to keep up with the conversation that’s bound to spring up over the water cooler.
