Our Thoughts:
I can’t believe it. After so many stops and starts since the release of the first X-Files movie, I had almost given up hope that another film would be forthcoming. Finally, however, after 10 years of waiting, the day is arriving this July, and X-Files 2 is hitting theaters.
I first got hooked on the show back in the first season, and stayed hooked up through most of Season 8. For some reason I can’t recall anymore, I didn’t catch Season 9, and have felt the pangs of it ever since. I figured I would finally check it out when the seasons started hitting DVD - and then when the 90 dollar price tag hit, I couldn’t afford it. Now that they’ve come out with the cheaper versions of the DVDs (40-50 dollar “Slim Sets”), I could get it, but I’ve decided to save my pennies (and birthday money) and pick up the entire series
in March.
Needless to say, this is going to be an X-Files summer for me, as I know I’m going to want to catch up on the seasons (and at the same time get Heather hooked so she’ll want to see the movie too) before the movie hits in July.
For those of you who lived under a rock for the 90’s, “The X-Files” highly popular TV series revolved around 2 FBI Agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Without getting too deep into things, they researched paranormal cases, and slowly unearthed a large and complicated government conspiracy concerning the existence of aliens. Mainly, the episodes were split into two categories: “standalone’s” that were just bizarre paranormal cases that did nothing to further develop the mystery of the conspiracy and “mythology” episodes that provided further clues about the conspiracy.
While the first film leaned more toward a “mythology” standpoint (including unleashing the “black oil” on an unsuspecting public), X-Files 2 is supposed to lean more toward one of the “standalone” episodes. As with many of the episodes on television, that (and a few of the cast members) are all that have leaked so far on the upcoming film.
Whatever way they decided to go, the main highlight of the series (and the first film) was the unique partnership between Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, respectively. These 2 relative unknowns (at least at the beginning of the series) gave these characters their all, and fans reveled in their performances. Despite the paranormal and/or conspiratorial events around them, they kept their unique balance, with Anderson’s Scully usually being the one to keep Mulder’s flights of fancy grounded in reality.
With a summer full of long-awaited films like Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (2008) and The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (2008), I have to say that The X-Files 2 is still at the top of my list of must-see movies this summer season.
With details/posters/videos etc. sure to start entering the public domain soon (and my upcoming purchase of the entire series), this summer is shaping up to be a memorable one for this “X-Files” fan.
