Synopsis:
Strange things begin happening as soon as the Grace family - Jared, his twin brother Simon, their sister Mallory and their mom - move into the house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Unable to explain the strange occurrences, the family blames Jared. When he, Simon and Mallory investigate, they uncover the truth of the Spiderwick estate…and the creatures that inhabit it. Based on the book series by Holly Black.
Our Thoughts:
Having never read these kids books, I wasn’t sure at all what to expect when I first checked out the trailer for The Spiderwick Chronicles…maybe something between Harry Potter and Spy Kids.
Instead, it seems to be more Jumanji - only without the humorous situations. Instead of crazy animals, we’ve got ogres, wolves and the like - the darker side of the fantasy genre, in other words.
From that brief glimpse, I did want to see more - but do I want to spend big bucks to see this? Nah…I can hold out for the DVD. While the graphics are impressive, I didn’t get enough of a chance in the preview to find out if the storyline is worth sticking around for, or if this one is just there to wow the kid set.
