The Ruins (2008)
Synopsis:
A group of friends become entangled in a brutal struggle for survival after visiting a remote archaeological dig in the Mexican jungle - where they discover something deadly living among the ruins. Based on the novel by Scott Smith.
Our Thoughts:
After seeing the preview for The Ruins, I had to stop a second and go back and watch the preview for Turistas, a film that came out in ‘07. After close inspection, it does look like these are actually 2 different films - although the previews look pretty similar.
Beautiful people in a sunny, exotic location are attacked and brutally murdered by some evil creature - that pretty much sums up the plot.
And if this was former “Iceman” Shawn Ashmore first choice to start his “life after X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)” career with, it gives us shudders to think of what he’s going to go with next.
The Ruins seems to be just another in a long line of horror films - and definitely not worth the big bucks to see on the big screen.
Probably, I’ll rent this when it hits DVD, and grab Turistas while I’m at it, and have a horror movie marathon that doesn’t require much thinking - but does require plenty of popcorn.
Of course, this film could be a lot better than it’s trailer (after all, I’ve never read the book, and there could be some great scenes hiding in there) - but who’s willing to risk it?
