Summer Movies ‘06
Ever since I can remember, summer has been the time where each week brought a new high profile movie or two vying for the buying public’s attention. The way things are shaping up, this summer looks to be no exception.
Films coming out in May:
- Mission: Impossible III (May 05)
- Poseidon (May 12)
- The Da Vinci Code (May 19)
- X-Men: The Last Stand (May 26)
2 sequels, a remake, and a movie based on the highest-selling novel of recent times coming out in May? Sounds like a good start to summer!
Now let’s take a look at June:
- Cars (June 09)
- Superman Returns (June 30)
Another Pixar film destined to become a classic and the movie return of the Man of Steel? Not bad for June.
Ok, July:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (July 7)
- A Scanner Darkly (July 7)
- Miami Vice (July 30)
I feel bad for A Scanner Darkly. Whose brilliant idea was it to put this one up against Pirates of the Caribbean 2? The reuniting of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and hottie Keira Knightley are going beat Scanner to a pulp opening weekend. Still, Scanner will probably be a huge hit once it hits DVD. As for the big-screen rehash of hit 80’s show Miami Vice? Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx look to be an interesting on-screen duo, but this one could go flop real fast if they don’t click.
And now, for August:
- Clerks II (Aug 18)
That’s it. Sure, Kevin Smith is great, but not everyone has forgotten Jersey Girl, so is that going to be enough to keep August hot in the theaters? Probably not.
And there it is, the summer wrap-up. Check back after the summer to check out what I actually got around to seeing, or visit the A Guide To Summer At The Movies ‘06 post this summer to read the reviews as they come along.
