Summer Movie Preview 2008, Part IV: August
As we wrap up July this coming weekend with The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008), we peek ahead at our picks for the final month of our Summer At The Movies - 2008 Edition.
August
Brendan Fraser is back, fighting for a third time against the re-awakened dead. Arnold Vosloo has been replaced by Jet Li; Rachel Weisz by Maria Bello; Michelle Yeoh has been added to the mix; the special effects have been amped up another notch - and Rob Cohen has replaced Stephen Sommers in the director’s chair. Will all these changes make this the best Mummy movie yet? Universal is banking on it, but we’ll find out for ourselves when The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (2008) is released August 01.
Ben Stiller is back for another comedy pic, this one teaming him with Jack Black and the now super-hot Robert Downey Jr. (in a much-talked about role) for a war movie spoof. Will Stiller be able to be pull off another spoof, or was Zoolander the best he had? We’re looking forward to finding out when Tropic Thunder (2008) hits theaters August 15.
Prior to stepping back into Frank’s shoes for The Transporter 3 (2008), Jason Statham jumps on-board this remake of an old - and rather chesy - Stallone film. Judging from the trailer, this new version looks to be a high-powered hour and a half of pure popcorn fun (and something NASCAR should look into to pump some excitement into car racing?). We’ll be sure to have our popcorn ready when Death Race (2008) zooms into theaters August 22.

While Vin Diesel has managed to disappoint us time and time again, the trailers for his latest film have caught our attention. Not to be confused with the Sci-Fi Channel “Babylon” series, this one’s a futuristic flick about a bodyguard and his charge - who apparently happens to also be a ticking time-bomb. We’re hoping this one works despite what we’re going to call “the Diesel factor”. Get ready for explosions and mayhem galore when Babylon A.D. (2008) bursts onto the big screen on August 29.
Also in August: Midnight Meat Train (2008), The Pineapple Express (2008), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), Mirrors (2008) and Traitor (2008).
