Shutter (2008)
Synopsis:
While on their honeymoon in Tokyo, a young photographer (Jackson) and his wife (Taylor) begin seeing ghostly images in his photographs that may be tied to their involvement in a hit-and-run accident. Based on the 2004 Thai movie of the same name.
Our Thoughts:
Hmmm…a foreign horror film being remade into an American movie. No, it’s not The Grudge 3, it’s Shutter, starring Joshua Jackson.
Apparently, the hip thing for ex-TV actors is to star in a horror flick. After all, if it worked for “Buffy”’s Sarah Michelle Gellar…
Still, I’m getting a bit sick of these foreign horror films being remade into American cheese. They lose a lot in the translation and come out the other side a lot worse for wear. Let’s try something novel - try bringing the foreign horror film over AS IS. Toss in a dubbing option on the DVD for those of us who don’t like to read our films, and voila! Instant cash.
Apparently, the excuse behind this latest is that the original 2004 Thai film is one of the highest-grossing movies in Thai history. Without knowing a whole lot about Thailand, is that saying a lot? I mean, the top film ever could be DOA: Dead Or Alive (2007) or something equally cheesy - we have no idea.
Even if Thailand’s tastes run similar to the US, they got the original - we get a copy starring an ex-”Dawson”-ite.
Maybe it’s a “Dawson’s Creek” curse - after all, even Dawson himself, James Van Der Beek, is now starring in cheesy Sci-Fi channel monster movies. Guess you have to marry big (i.e. Katie Holmes) if you’re going to make it in a world where the “Dawson’s Creek” fanbase has grown out of their awkward teenybopper years.
Sounds to me like we won’t be missing much if we skip this one in theaters. We can always pick it up later when it hits DVD if we really want to.
