RocknRolla (2008)
Synopsis:
When a Russian mobster sets up a shady real estate deal that make millions of dollars suddenly available, London’s criminal element takes notice.
Our Thoughts:
Another gangster crime movie is on the way, this one titled RocknRolla and starring Gerard Butler.
Guy Ritchie, known for his ensemble crime films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch looks for another hit with RocknRolla - and chances are that’s what he’s going to get.
Apparently, Guy originally wanted Jason Statham in the film (who starred in 3 of his previous films), but was unable to get him due to a scheduling conflict. Assuming Guy originally wanted Statham as the lead, Gerard Butler has taken over the role, and Guy is probably about to discover what a better choice Gerard is for the role.
While Statham has done decent stuff in the past (Snatch and and Crank (2006)being the best), he’s faltered recently, even appearing in a Uwe Boll film, In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2008), so audiences probably won’t be flocking as much to his name as they used to be (unless the movie is titled Crank 2 of course).
Gerard Butler, on the other hand, has done a good job of building up his career with films like Reign Of Fire (2002)- and is now super-hot, thanks to his turn in 300 (2007). Chances are good his name is starting to attract some attention, and could be just the boost RocknRolla needs to separate itself from it’s predecessors.
Let’s just hope that the film will live up to the promise it’s showing at this point (and that viewers won’t be sick of Thandie Newton after seeing her in W. (2008)earlier in the same month).
