Revolutionary Road (2008)

Synopsis:

Frank (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) find themselves doing their best to conform to what’s expected of them in 1950’s America. But, when they try to break from the norm, will it be too much for their marriage? Based on the novel by Richard Yates.

Our Thoughts:

Kate and Leo back together again - but will the magic still be there? Judging from the preview for Revolutionary Road, apparently not.

While Kate and Leo were able to blow up huge as an on-screen couple in Titanic, it’s highly doubtful this new film is going to be anywhere near as popular.

Part of the reason Titanic was so popular was it’s ability to span genders, with the film giving each gender some of what they wanted. For the women, there was the epic, yet doomed, love story between two shining stars. For the guys, there was an evil villain, massive special effects and, of course, the possible opportunity to see Kate Winslet naked (did every preview for the film mention the nude drawing, or was that just my impression?).

Revolutionary Road, on the other hand, doesn’t give the guys a lot to look forward to. Spats about married life and dealing with being stuck in a humdrum life? Not exactly the kind of thing that guys go for.

With no special effects, and the overall effect the film is going for seeming to be akin to arguing with the wife for an hour and a half, chances are good Revolutionary Road isn’t going to be high on any guy’s list.

Still, it’ll probably get a best actor or best actress nom by the Academy, which will probably reinvigorate interest for the film, but the crowds on this one are probably going to stay rather small.

Heather may end up renting this one by herself, because, personally, I got enough of the Kate & Leo romance with Titanic and hadn’t really been anticipating a reunion flick.

But then again, I’m a guy, so that’s to be expected.
