A shaky Vince McMahon is in the ring in a completely empty arena. He says that tonight’s 3-hour RAW was supposed to be the continuing storyling of his character’s demise.
He continues “However, in reality, WWE superstar Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and their son Daniel…are dead. Their bodies were discovered this afternoon…the authorities are undergoing an investigation.”
He goes on to say that tonight will be a 3-hour tribute to Chris Benoit.
Trying to keep their emotions in check, announcers Jerry “The King” Lawler, “J.R.” Jim Ross, Michael Cole, JBL, Joey Styles and Tazz show highlights from Chris Benoit’s career, and Chris Benoit is remembered by other WWE superstars, including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, John Cena, CM Punk, Dean Malenko, Chavo Guerrero, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and a very emotional Edge.
His wife Nancy was also in the wrestling business, going by the name of “Woman” in WCW.
Chris leaves behind a son, David, and a daughter, Meghan, from a previous relationship.
On a more personal note, Heather and I are shocked by this tragedy. He was one of our favorite wrestlers, and we don’t know what could have possessed him to commit these crimes.
Just a few weeks ago, we were there for the SmackDown taping in Orlando, and, even though he lost his match against Edge, the fans gave him one of the biggest standing ovations of the night. Looking surprised, Benoit stopped at the top of the ramp and pounded his chest with his hand in a gesture of appreciation. Now, we come to find out (thanks to Edge’s comments on tonight’s show) as he walked backstage he had a big smile on his face.
At the time, the fans were complimenting him on the show he had put on that night. Little did we know the events of just a few weeks later would completely sour our memory of that moment…and leave us stunned and searching for rational answers to an irrational chain of events.
Our hearts go out to Benoit’s friends and family at this time.
