Synopsis:

Donna’s (Snow) Senior Prom is supposed to be the best night of her life. After surviving a horrible tragedy, she has finally moved on and is enjoying her last year of high school. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of the past. But when the night turns deadly, there is only one person who could be responsible… A remake of the 1980 film of the same name.

Our Thoughts:

Apparently, Hollywood has decided it’s time to remake horror movies. After the success of Halloween (2007) last year (and the continuing success of the Saw films), they’ve decided to postpone their Friday The 13th remake until next year and focus on remaking the Jamie Lee Curtis starrer Prom Night.

Having never seen the original (I know, my classic horror film repertoire is sadly lacking), I can’t really say I’m excited for this remake. Brittany Snow, whose recent film accomplishments include a Vin Diesel film (The Pacifer), a “Desperate Housewives” boy toy flick (John Tucker Must Die (2006)) and a musical (Hairspray (2007)) tries her hand at leading this new high school squad into horrid death sequences. With that kind of resume, my thoughts are she’s going to be crappy - but maybe she’ll surprise me.

As for the rest, they probably won’t be alive long enough to garner viewer sympathy, and their biggest challenges will be how too overact their death scenes. The killer will probably be just another I Know What You Did Last Summer stalker - decently evil when his face is hidden, but rather disappointing when he’s revealed.

As I said, I haven’t seen the original, so that’s all conjecture on my part. Still, this new horror remake has picked a good time to hit theaters - in that lull after Spring Break and before the summer movie season starts. With less competition for horror films at that time than say, October, it’s probably bound to gather a crowd who were too young to see the original when it was back in theaters - and probably haven’t even heard of it.

In other words, I Know What You Did Last Summer for the new generation. They’ll probably flock to it, while I, being a bit older - and hopefully a bit more picky on how to spend my 8 bucks - will probably wait for the DVD for this one, and watch the original in the comfort of my own home.
