Our Thoughts:
So, maybe Passengers isn’t a new idea. Sure, we’ve seen bits and pieces of this before (Final Destination (2000)) - but we’re still intrigued.
Having seen the trailer over at the official site, this one looks like it has potential. Passengers has quite an impressive cast, including Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson (currently co-starring with Samuel L. Jackson in Lakeview Terrace (2008)) and Andre Braugher among others, with Dianne Wiest and David Morse rumored to be part of the cast as well.
It will be interesting to see how Anne Hathaway works in the thriller genre. Since she’s more known for her rom-com roles in The Princess Diaries, it will be a nice change of pace to see her test the waters of the thriller.
She’s recently been getting attention as a recovering drug addict in Rachel Getting Married, so it does look like she’s trying to break away from the rom-com/comedy set she’s found herself in for most of her career, and prove she should be taken seriously as an actress.
While Rachel Getting Married will giver her Indie cred and might impress critics, chances are the first look the masses will have of Hathaway’s non-comedic stint is with Passengers.
While the plot may seem a bit old, there is a chance that Hathaway and Co. can take this film and turn it into something really worth watching.
Just in case they can’t, we’ll wait for the DVD.
