the Mind’s Chew Toy

Synopsis:

Manny (Romano), Diego (Leary) Sid (Leguizamo) and Ellie (Latifah) return in this third film in the Ice Age series. Animated.

Our Thoughts:

The trio of Manny the Mammoth, Diego the Sabre-Toothed Tiger and Sid the Sloth return for a third adventure in next summer’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, with newcomer Ellie (from Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006)) bringing up the rear.

Ice Age (2002) was a fun animated adventure that bonded the audience with it’s hilarious title characters (and helped us bond to the unlikely pairing of Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo).

Unfortunately, that success went to their heads, and the shoddy Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006) followed 4 years later. This time they’ve given it 3 years - but are we in for another idiotic sequel, or will this be the sequel fans have been waiting for an Ice Age to see?

While the teaser trailer (like the ones for the previous films) mainly focuses on Scrat and doesn’t give much of the plot away, we do get a glimpse of the new obstacle of this film - namely dinosaurs.

Bigger and badder than anything else on the planet, these big reptiles could be the infusion this film series needs to boost it back up to the greatness it once was. Sure, it’s not going to be a mammal-bonding film like the first one, but the extra excitement of the dinosaurs could help pull in the crowds nonetheless.

While our hopes aren’t high that this new sequel will come anywhere close to being as good as the original, we still do have hopes for this series - and the dinosaurs are a bonus in our book.

Plus, it really can’t get any worse than Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006) - can it?
