Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (2008)
Synopsis:
After their breakfast at White Castle, Harold (Cho) decides to pursue Maria (Garces), the girl of his dreams, to Amsterdam…and Kumar (Penn) is pulled along for the ride. On the way to Amsterdam, however, an overzealous airline passenger mistakes Kumar for a terrorist, and the plane is diverted. Now all they have to do is convince the Feds they aren’t terrorists, and find Maria. Easier said than done.
Our Thoughts:
Those anti-role model, White Castle-craving slackers are back for another round!
A comedy using the anti-Muslim sentiment so rampant in this country as a base? Um…who thought this was going to be funny? Let’s just hope the filmmakers know what they’re doing, and do their best to focus on exploiting some of the more ridiculous sterotypes some people hold about Muslims, and present those to the audience through the very likeable duo of Kal Penn and John Cho. Still, it’s a suprising step for a comedy - especially one that doesn’t use much brain power.
The first film was such a ridiculousy simple road-trip movie (complete with a ludicrous destination), it caught on with the total ineptitude of it’s characters and their travels. The viewer found themselves laughing, almost in spite of themselves, at the sheer silliness of the movie.
Let’s hope this sequel, despite the touchier subjects it finds itself involved in, will be the idiotically funny continuation of the first film we want it to be, and not just simply idiotic…or the audience will be groaning rather than laughing. If that’s the case, this will be the last we ever see of Harold & Kumar.
