Flawless (2008)
Synopsis:
In 1960’s London, Laura Quinn (Moore) is a bright executive at The London Diamond Corporation, but has recently become frustrated by the apparent glass ceiling within the company. As man after man is promoted over her, she strikes up a friendship with the night janitor, Hobbs (Caine), who has his own bone to pick with the company. Together, they plan a diamond heist the likes of which London has never seen.
Our Thoughts:
While it will only be released in limited theaters, Flawless sounds like a hit to me.
First off, heist movies are always popular - just look at the success of everything from The Italian Job (2003) to Gone In 60 Seconds (2000) to Ocean’s Eleven and it’s 2 sequels, just to name a few.
Secondly, seeing Demi Moore back on the big screen should be well worth the wait, and teaming her up with the ever impressive Michael Caine? Well, that duo sounds almost worth the price of admission all by themselves.
So, why is this only being released in limited theaters? Usually it’s to either promote the film as an “art house” film (ie… low budget) or for films that the studios are a bit worried about (again, see “art house films”). With big name stars like Moore and Caine, it doesn’t seem to be a low-budget pic, so why the limited release? Unfortunately, it sounds like director Michael Radford managed to take these 2 talented actors and make a movie that the studio has decided isn’t going to do that well.
While I don’t know how Radford could have messed things up that badly, I’ll probably still wait to see this one when it hits DVD. After all, we’re saving our pennies to check out the blockbusters on the big screen.
Plus, Flawless seems to be more of the type of film that won’t lose much in it’s translation from the big screen to the small screen. Here’s hoping it’s worth the rental.
