EuroTrip (2004)

When I first heard about the film EuroTrip, I wasn’t sure I really wanted to see it. You know, the whole fact that most of the lead roles were being played by no-name Actors. Then Reid went off to Marietta, Georgia and was able to watch the film. He let me know that the film was actually quite comical and that I should see it. So, we finally had the time to go to our local Hollywood Video and rent it. Would it measure up to the hype or would it be just another bomb on the comedy film trail?
One of the actresses that I did recognize is Michelle Trachtenberg, due to the role she played as Buffy’s sister Dawn in TV’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. I believe that little Dawn (rather, Michelle) did an excellent job on this film. It was a little difficult seeing her in sexual situations, as I am used to seeing her as little sister Dawn in “Buffy”. As it turned out, she made the transition to an 18 year old girl (who isn’t all that innocent) very well. I would say this was her chance to show her wild side after being cooped up as “little sis” for so many years - and she put it to good use.
The other main characters - Scott Mechlowicz, Jacob Pitts and Travis Wester - did decent jobs in their roles, but the special guest appearances really stole the show. These appearances included Matt Damon singing a catchy song and Xena’s Lucy Lawless as one of Amsterdam’s brothel Madames. It was interesting and surprising to see these two actors in this film as there are so many no-name leads.
It seems that the producers have come up with something that works for them in their previous comedies, Old School and Road Trip. For EuroTrip, they decided to combine elements of both into this film. In Old School, the whole film kicks off with the main character’s girlfriend cheating on him. Same here. In Road Trip, the main character goes on his trip to rekindle his romance with his girlfriend after making a bad judgement call. Here, the main character goes to find his e-mail buddy after mistakenly sending her a bad e-mail. I guess this formula works for the producers, so they’re going to stick with it until it’s dead. Surprisingly, EuroTrip combines elements of both Old School and Road Trip, yet comes off better than both of it’s predecessors.
All in all, EuroTrip wasn’t a bad movie but there were some unnecessary parts of the film. Although I am female, there is just so many times you can look at the male genitalia on film. I will never be able to get the nightmares to stop of ugly naked men running with everything flapping in the wind.
But, aside from the unnecessary shots, the film was very well put together and I would recommend it to all adults. It is an entertaining hour and a half - but you would definitely have to judge for yourself whether or not it is worth owning.
