Synopsis:
Family services social worker Emily (Zellweger) thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest case, troubled 10-year old Lilith (Ferland). Emily decides to take her in herself after Lilith’s parents try to kill her - only to discover the situation is a lot more dangerous than she expected.
Our Thoughts:
Haven’t heard much about Case 39 yet. So far, about all I know is it’s an upcoming horror film, it’s set for release in ‘09, and it stars Renee Zellweger.
Since Renee Zellweger captured audiences attention with her role in Jerry Maguire, she’s made some interesting choices, but Case 39 seems the oddest to date.
Skipping around between a chick flick (Bridget Jones’ Diary) to a comedy (Me, Myself & Irene) to an animated flick (Shark Tale) and back again - even tossing in a musical (Chicago (2002)) at one point, she definitely seems to be an actress who reads her scripts.
Her films may not all be big hits, but she seems to enjoy making each of them, and brings a piece of herself into every character. While her characters aren’t exactly the same, they all tend to have - at least at the start - a bit of child-like innocence to them.
Will that child-like innocence help her in Case 39? Probably. But will viewers want to watch innocent Zellweger get put into those situations? Maybe - and maybe not.
Case 39 has the chance to be creepy and tense - but if they misuse Zellweger’s character, there is also a good chance this movie could be awful.
I think I’ll wait for the trailer for this one before I make up my mind on it.
