Synopsis:

For super-dog Bolt (Travolta), every day is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue – at least until the cameras stop rolling. When the canine star of a hit TV show is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he begins his biggest adventure yet – a cross-country journey through the real world. Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and with the help of two unlikely traveling companions – a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens (Susie Essman), and TV-obsessed hamster in a plastic ball named Rhino (Walton) – Bolt discovers he doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.

Our Thoughts:

When I first heard about the upcoming Disney animated film Bolt, it sounded great. A TV dog star is misplaced in the Nevade desert and he meets up with a one-eyed cat and a radioactive rabbit! And the voices! John Travolta! Bernie Mac! Woody Harrelson! Thomas Hayden Church!

Just on a whim, I decided to check out the latest details on the film…and now everything has changed.

No longer abandoned in a Nevada desert, Bolt is now shipped to NYC. And his companions? The one-eyed cat has been replaced by “an abandoned housecat” named Mittens (!)…and the radioactive rabbit has been replaced by a “TV-obsessed hamster in a plastic ball”.

While John Travolta is still around, Thomas Haden Church, Woody Harrelson and Bernie Mac are also now missing…replaced by (among others) Miley freakin’ Cyrus.

Am I the only one that is disappointed by these changes?

Sure, Disney will probably do a good job of making the characters just as funny as usual (my bet: look for the hamster to steal the show)…but when compared to the earlier reports of the film, it seems like they took something original and eye-catching and turned it into more of a generic film, complete with a bland plot, offering that calls up more of an animated Homeward Bound feel than Mad Max for animals.

Maybe the previews will help renew my interest in Bolt. As it stands now, this is looking like a possible DVD rental at the most.
