Best Reviewed Films of 2007

Since it’s the last day of 2007, we decided to take a look back at the year in film, and see how things shaped up.

Thanks to our July 07, 2007 wedding, we skipped the Summer Movies 2007 season for the most part and have been playing catch up ever since. While we are still behind (with hits like Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2007) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) still among many others on our must-see list), we did get a chance to check out 36 2007 movie releases to date.

The Best

Since everybody likes good news better than bad, let’s start from the top first. At the top of our list, with our only perfect score on a 2007 film, is 300 (2007), the Gerard Butler-led stunning visual epic about 300 Spartans defending their homeland from a massive army of Persians.

Notable Mentions

We had 6 movies at our second highest score of they year, 4 out of 5 stars. Bruce Willis’ 4th installment in the Die Hard series, Live Free Or Die Hard (2007), brought everybody’s favorite cop John McClane back for a 4th adventure that was bigger and better than most anyone was expecting after the dismal Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995).

An 80’s favorite is re-invented Michael Bay style in 2007 Summer Blockbuster Transformers (2007), and we loved it. With the Transformers themselves stunningly impressive, it was hard for the actors to compete - but newcomer Shia LaBeouf did, thus cementing his status as a fully-fledged movie star.

Zombie comedy Fido (2007) also made our list, as a “dead” Billy Connolly out-acted many others, and Carrie Anne-Moss jumped into her post-Matrix career as a lonely housewife in this dark comedy that turned out to be one of the funniest movies of the year.

While we usually love Jim Carrey the comedian, his dark turn as an obsessed man searching for meaning in The Number 23 (2007) shot to the top of our list this year. This was quite a surprise to us, as we were expecting more of a The Majestic-type performance from him.

Animated surfing penguins in Surf’s Up (2007) beat out TMNT (2007), Disney’s Meet The Robinsons (2007), even Pixar’s latest entry Ratatouille (2007) and highly anticipated sequel Shrek The Third (2007) to become our best reviewed animated film of 2007. Again, props to Shia LaBeouf for popping up a second time in the list, this time as a voice.

Also coming in at 4 out of 5 stars is Quentin Tarantino’s latest, Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof (2007), a retro horror flick starring 80’s fave Kurt Russell. And how did the second part of this double-feature do? Quentin’s addition to the Grindhouse package beat out Robert Rodriguez’s companion film, Grindhouse Presents: Planet Terror (2007), by a full star.
