An Update On The Benoit Tragedy

According to wwe.com, Chris Benoit was unable to attend either the Saturday house show in Beaumont, TX or the Vengeance: Night Of Champions 06.24.07 Pay-Per-View on Sunday, citing a “family emergency”.

After receiving several curious text messages from Benoit early Sunday morning, concerned friends of the wrestler alerted Richard Hering, VP of Government Relations for WWE, Inc., who in turn asked local police to check on the family.

Upon entering, they discovered the bodies of Chris, his wife Nancy and their son Daniel.

At a press conference Monday night, Fayetteville Sheriff Lt. Pope held a press conference, stating that the findings were indicative of a double-murder/suicide.

A FOX owned-and-operated TV station in Atlanta, under the call letters WAGA, reported that authorities believe Benoit killed his wife and son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

Heather and I, big fans of Chris Benoit, are stunned by this news, and are seeking any sort of answers.

Did he go crazy from steroids, as many non-wrestling fans believe? While this could be possible, the fact that Chris Masters was recently prevented from wrestling while he cleaned up his steroid habit seems to make this theory ring a bit false. Why would they send home one superstar, but not another? With no results on toxicology reports availble for 2 weeks (again according to wwe.com), we can only guess.

But, if it wasn’t steroids, what was it? What could possess Chris to commit these atrocious crimes? After seeing the reactions of his friends on RAW last night, it’s pretty obvious they had no idea this was coming either. So what could have caused this? What kind of marital problems - no matter how difficult - would make a man who supposedly believed in honor, respect, and integrity commit these horrible crimes?

We are searching for answers while we try to wrap our minds around this shocking turn of events.

We’ll update the site as soon as we know anything new.
