A Perfect Getaway (2009)

Synopsis:

While enjoying their honeymoon in Hawaii, a new husband (Zahn) and wife (Jovovich) decide to go for a hike. But the area has breen a recent target of vactioner murders, and the newlyweds’ meeting with a strange pair (Olyphant and Sanchez) may mean they could be the next victims.

Our Thoughts:

Looking over the films coming soon, A Perfect Getway sounded like just another in the recent spate of horror movies (Ruins (2008), The Descent, etc.). Unimpressive, until I noticed it starred Milla Jovovich.

That gave me a moment of pause. Isn’t she above this type of film now? After successfully leading the way in the film translation of the popular video game series, Resident Evil (2002) and it’s two sequels seems to have raised her star enough that she wouldn’t have to star in these throwaway horror films.

Apparently not - and this throwaway horror flick sounds pretty bad, what with bumbling co-stars Steve Zahn (National Security (2003)) and Timothy Olyphant (Hitman (2007)) ready to bring the movie crashing down around them.

Maybe Milla has put her faith in director David Twohy’s ability to pull decent performances out of even the worst of actors. Maybe she’s thinking if Twohy could make Vin Diesel worth watching in Chronicles Of Riddick (2004), can it really be an impossible task to bring out the best in Zahn and Olyphant?

Still, here’s hoping A Perfect Getaway shows her character forced to fight the good fight sans hubby Zahn, so she is able to bring a bit of Resident Evil (2002) nostalgia to the film as she takes on Olyphant (who will probably be doing his best to imitate the undead).

Unsurprisingly, I think I’m going to wait for the DVD to see how this one turns out. There’s just too many things that have to go right to make this one work.
